Batang Ai, but for whom?

Fate has not intervened in the destiny of Malaysian politics for a while until now. The last time it did, we lost several national leaders in the 1970s, bringing forth Tun Hussein Onn and later Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Since Election 2008 that ended Barisan Nasional’s traditional two-thirds parliamentary majority, there have been two parliamentary by-elections and there are a few more by-elections coming due to either deaths or resignations.

Decisive leadership won the day in Perak

Pakatan Rakyat’s lustre as credible government leaders is fading. They have found it difficult to be statesmen, a role far apart from their usual comfortable and easier position of condemning the Barisan Nasional government for anything and everything under the sun.

Maybe it’s hard for them to throw away their personal interests and life-long habits for the good of their coalition. An unholy union of sorts for the common interest of grabbing power.

Truth is, they did not expect the hard reality of governing the newly-won states last year to catch up with them so soon. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t change in the longer term.

Barisan Nasional has taken power in Perak after the collapse of the Pakatan Rakyat’s self serving coalition.

The fragile coalition government of former Pas Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin finally collapsed as expected with the defections of two PKR and one DAP state representatives.

The global financial crisis has triggered calls for unrestrained government spending and tax cuts to boost economic growth from a range of politicians, economists and even the public who are now posting comments on Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s website www.1malaysia.com.my.

Pakatan Rakyat economic advisors have proposed a RM50 billion stimulus package to improve the economy.

Reforms and rebirths

While waiting for the results of my re-election as Member of Parliament for Pulai this year, I caught my father, Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat , a former long time Minister and Secretary General of Umno and Barisan Nasional sitting by himself in tears.

I wondered why he was crying, after all we knew that I had won with a majority of 20,000 votes.
